đ„ A Devotee Unlike Any Other
Most saints approach God with humility, reverence, and surrender. But Sundarar was different. He treated Lord Shiva as his closest friend, spoke to Him as an equal, and even demanded favors from Him. He did not just prayâhe argued, negotiated, and sometimes even scolded Shiva!
Yet, Shiva loved him deeply. Unlike other devotees, Shiva accepted Sundararâs friendship, played along with his demands, and granted him countless miracles.
How did a man who argued with Shiva become one of the greatest Nayanars (Tamil Shaivite saints)? Letâs explore the fascinating, rebellious, and miraculous life of Sundarar.
đż Sundararâs Birth and Destiny
Sundarar was born in a high-caste Brahmin family in Tamil Nadu, but his soul belonged only to Shiva. Legends say that in a past life, he was a close companion of Shiva in Kailasa (Shivaâs celestial abode). When he was born as a human, Shiva made sure he never forgot their friendship.
As Sundarar grew up, he was well-versed in scriptures, poetry, and temple traditions. But deep inside, he was not interested in religious ritualsâhe only wanted to be with Shiva, his eternal friend.
đč The Wedding That Changed Everything
As Sundarar reached adulthood, his family arranged a grand wedding for him. The bride was beautiful, the ceremony was lavish, and everything seemed perfect.
But just before the marriage, an old man walked into the wedding hall and declared:
The guests were shocked. Sundararâs family asked the old man to prove his claim. The old man produced a palm-leaf document, claiming that Sundarar was bound to serve him for life. Sundarar was furious. He shouted at the old man:âThis young man cannot marry! He is already my servant.â
The case was taken before the village elders. They examined the document, and to everyoneâs surprise, it looked authentic. Sundarar angrily said to the old man:âYou are a liar! You are trying to ruin my wedding. I will take you to court!â
At that moment, the old man revealed his true formâit was Lord Shiva Himself! Sundarar fell to his knees, realizing his mistake. Shiva smiled and said:âYou are nothing but a madman!â (Tamil: âPiththanâ)
From that moment, Sundarar abandoned worldly life and became Shivaâs closest companion.âYou called me âPiththanâ (madman), so from today, you will be known as âVanthondanâ (The Servant Who Came by Force).â
đ¶ The Poet Who Negotiated with Shiva
Unlike other saints who renounced desires, Sundarar loved the pleasures of life. He wanted good food, fine clothes, and a comfortable lifeâbut he also wanted to serve Shiva.
So, what did he do? He made Shiva pay for everything!
1. The Time He Asked Shiva for Gold
One day, Sundarar ran out of money while traveling. Instead of worrying, he went straight to Shiva and complained:
Shiva, amused by Sundararâs audacity, told him:âOh Lord, if you truly love me, give me gold right now!â
Sundarar ran to the lake and found heaps of gold coins in the water. He took what he needed and continued his journey!âGo to the temple lake and take as much gold as you want.â
2. The Time He Made Shiva Sign a Loan Agreement
On another occasion, Sundarar needed a large sum of money. He went to a wealthy man and asked for a loan. The man agreedâbut only if Shiva signed as the guarantor!
Sundarar walked into the temple and said:
A divine voice echoed:âShiva, you are my friend! Come and sign this document.â
Sundarar did exactly that! Later, when the lender came to collect his money, Shiva Himself repaid the loan in gold.âGo ahead and sign my name.â
3. The Time He Scolded Shiva for Giving Him Too Much Wealth
On another occasion, Shiva granted Sundarar so much wealth that he became arrogant. He forgot Shiva and started enjoying luxuries. But soon, thieves stole everything.
Realizing his mistake, Sundarar rushed back to Shiva and scolded him again!
Shiva smiled and said:âWhat kind of a friend are you?! You gave me wealth and let me lose it! Either take it all away or make sure I never forget you again!â
From that day, Sundarar only asked Shiva for what he truly needed.âFrom now on, you will never desire wealth again.â
đ„ The Final Miracle: When Shiva Sent His White Elephant
When Sundarar grew old, he longed to return to Shivaâs celestial abode, Kailasa. He prayed:
One day, as Sundarar sat in meditation, a magnificent white elephant descended from the sky. It was Shivaâs divine vehicle, sent to carry Sundarar to Kailasa.âO my Lord, will you not take me back to where I truly belong?â
Sundarar climbed onto the elephant and, with a final smile, vanished into the heavens. He had returned to his true homeâby Shivaâs side, forever.
đ Lessons from Sundararâs Life
Sundararâs life was unique among saints. He did not renounce the world, nor did he live in extreme austerity. He showed us that Shiva is not just a distant godâHe is a friend, a companion, and a beloved.
What can we learn from him?
â
God is not just a LordâHe can also be a friend.
â
It is okay to talk to God, complain, and even argueâHe listens!
â
Spiritual life does not mean abandoning joyâit means balancing devotion with daily life.
â
Ultimate liberation comes when we surrender fully to divine grace.
âO Shiva, let me love You, laugh with You, and walk with Youâjust as Sundarar did.ââ
đ Conclusion: The Saint Who Loved Without Fear
Sundarar did not just worship Shivaâhe loved Him with a fearless heart. He questioned, complained, demanded, and played with Shiva as one would with a best friend.
His story is a reminder that God is not a distant judgeâHe is the closest companion we will ever have.
đ„ Are you ready to love Shiva the way Sundarar did?
đ„ Are you ready to call upon Himânot as a god, but as a friend?
đ„ Are you ready to walk with Him, talk with Him, and surrender everything to Him?
If yes, then Sundararâs spirit still lives in your heart. đđ„
