Vishnu, taking the form of a mighty boar (Varaha), plunged downward into the depths of existence, determined to find the base of this fiery column. He tunneled through the earth, past layers of reality unknown to mortals, but the foundation of the fire remained elusive. Exhausted and humbled, he conceded defeat. Brahma, on the other hand, chose the path upward, soaring high as a swan (Hamsa). He flew beyond the skies, past the realms of the gods, seeking the peak of the divine flame. But after what felt like an eternity, he realized that there was no end to this light. Desperate to claim victory, Brahma resorted to deception. He encountered a fragrant ketaki flower drifting down from above and convinced it to bear false witness that he had indeed reached the summit. Returning triumphantly, Brahma declared himself the victor. But Shiva, omniscient and beyond illusion, saw through the deception. Angered, he pronounced a curse: "Brahma would never again be worshipped in temples, and the ketaki flower would never be offered in devotion. Vishnu, on the other hand, was blessed for his honesty and humility."
